What Happens if You Don’t Clean Your Dirty Gutters?

It’s time to start cleaning your gutters regularly, if you’re not doing it already. This is not a fun job by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s something that simply can’t be put off too long for fear of the consequences, small and large. And yes, there are a lot of things that can happen if you don’t clean your gutters! How much harm can dirty gutters do? A lot more than you might think.

Cleaning Dirty Gutters

No One Enjoys Gutter Cleaning, But…

Gutters simply don’t work well if they are not properly cleaned on a regular basis. This means a minimum of once every 6 months for most houses in the US. No matter what kind of gutters you have, they can have big problems if they get dirty.

Dirty gutters can lead to leaks all around your home. Small clogs build up and cause water to sit, which may lead to leaks in the gutters, the roof, the basement, and possibly even the foundation. All of this can happen just because water is not able to flow properly through the channels out to a good drainage field away from the house.

It isn’t just leaks you need to worry about though. In some cases, when dirty gutters are left too long, they can fail completely and break apart. They may fall from your house onto the ground, develop gaping holes, disfigure into shapes that don’t carry water away, or break along seams and connection areas. When your gutters stop working right, they cannot carry water away from your home properly.

The purpose of a gutter is to get water from your roof to a more controlled drainage area. One of the main reasons for this is to keep your foundation secure. It’s entirely possible that if your gutters break or fail and water drains along the side of the house, you may experience problems with your foundation, not to mention your home’s siding.

Foundation issues include cracks in concrete foundations and potentially walls, insect infestations (from entering in through the foundation), rot in wooden foundations, and damage caused by ice. Wherever water can enter, ice can form in the winter time. This is very dangerous for a concrete foundation, because it can create increasingly larger cracks that may end up making your house structurally unsound.

All of this is possible from just neglecting to clean and maintain your gutters? Yes! It might not all happen, and some of these problems can take time to develop, but all of these issues can be directly caused by poor water drainage systems and dirty gutters!

Options for Cleaning Your Gutters

If you want to make sure you don’t face the above-mentioned problems, you’re going to have to clean your gutters. You don’t have to do it yourself, because there are a lot of companies that offer this service to people who can’t or don’t want to clean their own gutters.

Cleaning gutters yourself is easy enough for people with one-story homes, and can be made easier with certain gutter guard products. However, if you can’t keep up a regular maintenance schedule and clean them out at least once every 6 months, you should hire someone else to come and do it for you to make sure you keep your gutters fully functional.

How to Do Gutter Cleaning Right on Tall Houses?

Gutter Cleaning

Risks of Gutter Cleaning on Tall Houses

Most gutter cleaning involves climbing up on a ladder and cleaning out the gutters by hand. When you have a very tall house, you will need a large extension ladder. Using extension ladders can be quite dangerous, and the risk of falling increases a lot at these higher heights. At some point, the risk of falling might outweigh the cost of having a service company come and clean the gutters for you.

The other risk is that you may spend money on devices and tools you won’t be able to use properly or that will not work right for your situation. Gutters that are too high up may require some more advanced tools than regular gutters, when it comes to cleaning time. This gear can cost hundreds of dollars, and it’s not as simple to use as the regular setup. That money might be better spent on a company that already has the right equipment and can do the job more easily.

Can You Clean Tall Gutters Yourself?

The short answer is yes, you can clean your own tall gutters. But, you have to be willing to take on the risks mentioned above, which can be very substantial. Also, you will need a cleaning partner to make sure you stay safe on a tall ladder or to help you spot if you’re using a pressure washing machine.

Tall extension ladders are best used when there is someone to hold them steady on the bottom. Since the simplest way to clean out gutters is by hand, this is possible on your tall gutters, as long as you have the right size of ladder. However, if you’re at all nervous on a ladder or afraid of heights, this just might not be a great idea for you.

The other suggestion for tall houses is to use a long pressure washer with a downward facing nozzle. While this can be helpful for cleaning out gutters while you stand on the ground, these tools are a bit difficult to manage. Plus, as mentioned above, the money spent on the tool may not really be worth it if you only use it every once in a while to clean out your gutters.

Sometimes tall houses have even longer downspouts. This is the forgotten downside of cleaning gutters for tall houses. If you are not prepared to clean out downspouts, you may not want to consider doing the job itself. But, if you’re determined, you can check if the downspouts even need to be cleaned at all by running some water through the gutters and down the spouts before you begin.

Can You Clean Gutters With A Leaf Blower?

Cleaning out gutters is something that should be done regularly. While we always think of the ladder cleaning method as the other choice, there are numerous methods to clean out the gutters. One that’s not as common, but works just as well, is gutter cleaning with leaf blowers. A leaf blower or a shop vac will be able to suck up leaves or blow them out of the gutters easily, so it’s no wonder this method is used by some who want the job to go by quickly!

Gutter Cleaning with Leaf Blowers

Want to know more? Here’s what you need to know about gutter cleaning with leaf blowers:

gutter cleaning leaf blower– Is it easier than regular cleaning?

While it’s hard to say it’s easier or harder, it does take less time than manually scooping out the whole gutter system. It could be considered harder for some people, because you’ll need to climb up the ladder with a leaf blower, or else use a long pole attachment from the ground. With limited arm strength, this would be harder than the normal methods.

– Is it safe?

As long as you use the right safety precautions and dress appropriately, it’s safe to clean your gutters with a leaf blower. There is no reason to be afraid of this any more than you would be of normal gutter cleaning methods.

– How do you set up your leaf blower?

That depends on how you want to do the cleaning. If you want to clean from the ground, you’ll need a long pole attachment that’s rigid from the ground to the gutters and turns at least 90 degrees to form an angle on the top. The pole should ultimately face downwards into the gutters, so that you can turn on the leaf blower and push everything out from the ground.

Alternatively, you can carry a small leaf blower up the ladder with you. Make sure you’re maintaining a good grip on the ladder, and that the leaf blower is not too heavy to use in one hand.

It’s a good idea to put an attachment on the leaf blower that will make the air shoot out from a narrow tube. This will concentrate the flow of air and make it easier to blow leaves out of the gutters and away from the house.

– Can you clean the downspouts with a leaf blower?leaf blower attachments

The short answer is yes. But, you may need a special attachment to make it possible. You can flush out a downspout with your leaf blower by concentrating the air flow through the top of the downspouts and pushing everything down through the bottom. Or, you can vacuum the leaves out if there is a clog. Sometimes large clogs cannot be cleaned out this way, and you may need to do it with another method.

Gutter cleaning with leaf blowers can help you clear out the mess out leaves, sticks, and debris without having to use your hands. If you get the right attachments, you have even be able to do it from the ground without a ladder.

Gutter Cleaning Cost

When people first decide that hiring a gutter cleaning service is a better option than trying to clean their own gutters, one of the first things they are usually concerned about it the cost involved.  This is a perfectly reasonable concern, after all, you work hard for your money.  So, you want to make sure that you are getting good value for what you are spending your money on.

Before getting into specific prices it’s important for you to remember a few things.  First, cleaning out gutters is hard work.  Second gutter cleaning prices are very reasonable when you consider the amount of work that is involved, and the problems that will arise if you don’t clean and maintain your rain gutters on a regular basis.

What Should You Expect To Pay For Gutter Cleaning?

The amount of money you are going to pay for gutter cleaning is going to depend on a lot of factors.  Those factors include where you live, the length of gutters that need to be cleaned, and whether or not your home is a multi-story home.  With that being said, the following are some rough estimates that should give you an idea of the ballpark figure you should be looking at when you hire a professional gutter cleaning company.

  •  For a single-story home of about 1,500 square feet, a professional gutter cleaning service should charge you between $140 and $200.
  •  For a two-story home of about 2,500 square feet, a professional gutter cleaning service should charge you between $170 to $215.
  • If you live in a three-story home or a two-story home where the upper level is higher than normal and more difficult to reach, a professional gutter cleaning service should charge you between $240 to $420.

What Factors Could Lead To Higher Gutter Cleaning Prices For You?

After calling a professional gutter cleaning service you may end up being quoted a price that is higher than what the estimates above suggest it should be.  This could mean one of two things.  First of all, it could mean that you have chosen a gutter cleaning company that charges higher gutter cleaning prices than the average company.

If the amount of additional money that they are charging is reasonable, and the company has a great reputation, then you may want to consider paying the additional money since you will almost certainly be getting great service.  On the other hand, if the gutter cleaning cost that they are quoting you is significantly higher than normal, and they don’t have a stellar reputation, then they are probably trying to take advantage of you.  If that’s the case then this is obviously not the kind of gutter cleaning service you want working on your home.

The other reason that you may be quoted a higher gutter cleaning price is that the amount of work that is involved is more than the company would normally face on a typical gutter cleaning job.  If the gutter cleaning service that you have hired is charging you more than you expect, then you have the right to ask them why the cost is higher.

If they provide you a reasonable explanation, then you should probably go ahead and hire them as long as the amount of money they are charging you seems to be fair.  Remember, a gutter cleaning company is like any other company.  If they have to do more work on a job, then they are going to want to be compensated for it.  So, what factors could result in a higher gutter cleaning cost for you?

  1.  Having To Deal With Gutter Guards

What is a gutter guard? A gutter guard is a screen, cover, or another type of device that you can attach to your gutters.  The purpose of gutter guards is to help keep debris from getting into your rain gutters and downspouts, which in theory would make it so that you don’t have to have them cleaned out on a regular basis.  In theory, this sounds like a great idea.

Unfortunately, while they may seem like a great idea, in theory, the reality is that gutter guards and other types of gutter covers are essentially useless.  What makes this even worse is the fact that in addition to being something you pay for that doesn’t work, you also have to pay a gutter cleaning service additional money to remove them and reinstall them when they come out to clean your gutters.

The best thing you can do if you have gutter guards and have a  gutter cleaning service come to your home is to have them remove the gutter guards and never put them back on.

  1.  Having To Spend Extra Time Clearing Out An Obstruction

If you have a rock, toy, or any other solid object blocking one of your rain gutters or downspouts, then this will usually end up adding to your bill.  Most gutter cleaning companies use a combination of a high-pressure water spraying to clean out gutters and then follow this up with a high air pressure spray.

When you have a solid obstruction this approach usually won’t work, which means that your gutter system may have to be partially taken apart to get the obstruction out.  So if this happens to be the case with your home, don’t be surprised if you have to pay a little more for the gutter cleaning service you hire.

  1.  Having Especially Dirty Gutters And Downspouts

If it’s been longer than normal between gutter cleanings chances are pretty good that your rain gutters and downspouts are going to be much dirtier than normal.  If that happens to be the case, then you should probably expect to pay more for the gutter cleaning service that you hire.  It all comes down to the fact that they are going to have to put more time and effort into cleaning your gutters than they normally would, which usually translates to a bigger bill for you.

  1.  Landscaping That Makes Things Difficult For Them

Another thing that could make things more challenging for the gutter cleaning service you hire will usually end up costing you more money.  That includes landscaping that makes things more difficult for them.  If you have trees, bushes, and other things in your yard that are going to serve as obstacles for the gutter cleaning service you hire, then it’s going to cost you a little more to have your gutters cleaned

Reasons Why Gutter Cleaning Prices Are Very Reasonable In Most Cases

At this point, you may be wondering if it’s worth hiring a professional company to come out and clean your rain gutters and downspouts.  It may not seem like a technically demanding job, but the truth is that there is more to it than most people realize.

Yes, a good part of gutter cleaning involves removing the muck that ends up in them, but that’s really only the start of the process.  A professional company will not only clean out the muck, they will do so using high-pressure water and air sprayers that will leave your gutters and downspouts as clean as if they were brand new.One aspect that most people don’t think about when they are looking at gutter cleaning prices is how much money it could cost them if they neglect their gutters.

Rain gutters can last a long time, even a lifetime, but only if they are properly cleaned and maintained. If they aren’t then they are prone to warping, pulling off of a house, and collapsing due to the extra weight that the muck in them adds to them.On top of the risk of damage to your rain gutters and downspouts, you also have to be concerned with the damage that your home could suffer should your rain gutters fail.

When rain gutters fail rainwater is allowed to flow into a home and onto your lawn in an uncontrolled manner.  When this happens the water will get into places that you never want water to get into, which can lead to soil erosion, toxic black mold infestation, and even damage to the foundation of your home.

Hiring A Professional Gutter Cleaning Service Is An Investment That Is Well Worth It

When looking at the cost of gutter cleaning try not to look at just the money you are spending.  Instead, look at what you are getting for your money.  The first thing you are getting is the ability to avoid doing a dirty, nasty, and exhausting job.  More importantly, you are getting a means to keep your rain gutters and downspouts functioning the way that they were meant to.  That means that they can protect your home from water damage.

When you maintain your rain gutters and downspouts properly you will also greatly increase the length of time that they should last for you.  The bottom line is simple, spending money for a professional gutter cleaning service is well worth it and will help to protect your most valuable asset, your home.
